A good friend or supporter may or may not be the same age or the same sex as you, and may not have the same educational, cultural, or religious background, or share interests that are similar to yours. Friendships also have different depths. Some are closer to the heart and some more superficial, but they’re all useful and good.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12%between 1999and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are

5

packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

60. What does the underlined phrase “that over-consumption” refer to? A. Using too much packaging. B. Recycling too may wastes.

C. Making more products than necessary. D. Having more material than is needed.

61. The author uses figures in paragraph 2 to show . A. the tendency of cutting household waste B. the increase of packaging recycling C. the rapid growth of supermarkets D. the fact of packaging overuse

62 According to the text, recycling . A. helps control the greenhouse effect B. means burning packaging for energy C. is the solution to gas shortage D. leads to a waste of land

63. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult. B. Needless material is mostly recycled. C. people like collecting recyclable wastes.

Researchers at the University of Kansas say that people can accurately judge 90 percent of a stranger’s personality simply by looking at the person’s shoes.

“Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers,” the authors wrote in the new study published in the Journal of Research in personality.“Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”

Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits detected in the study include a person’s general age, their gender, income, political affiliation, and other personality traits, including someone’s emotional stability.

Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone’s shoes. In the study, 63 University os Kansas students looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study’s participants. Volunteers in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire.

So, What do your shoes say about your personality?

Some of the results were expected: People with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flasher footwear was typically worn by extroverts (外向性格的人)

However, some of the more specific results are intriguing. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more “agreeable” people, while ankle boots were more closely aligned with “aggressive” personalities.

The strangest of all may be that those who wore “uncomfortable looking” shoes tend to have “calm personalities”.

And if you have several pairs of new shoes or take exceptional care of them, you may suffer from “attachment anxiety”, spending an inordinate amount of time worrying about what other people think of your appearance.

There was even a political calculation in the mix with more liberal types wearing “shabbier and less expensive” shoes.

The researchers noted that some people will choose shoe styles to mask their actual personality traits, but researchers noted that volunteers were also likely to be unaware that their footwear choices were revealing deep insights into their personalities. 68. We learn from the text that shoes one wears may . A. be used to judge others’ personality accurately

B. show thick and useful information about one’s personality C. only convey some information about one’s personality

D. convey useful information including one’s emotional stability 69. Which of the following is not true according to the text?

A. People with high incomes probably wear expensive shoes.

B. People wear practical and functional shoes may be hard to deal with. C. Ankle boots are closely aligned with“ aggressive” personalities. D. People wearing “uncomfortalbe looking” shoes tend to be calm. 70. What does the underlined words “attachment anxiety” probably mean? A. Attached happiness to one’s personality. B. Feeling always worried about everything.

8

C. Often feeling worried about his or her appearance. D. Wasting an inordinate amount of time. 71.What can be the best title for this article? A. Shoes and One’s Personality B. Shoes and Information C. Shoes One Wears

D. Judging One’s Personality

People have been burying the dead at Salem’s Hope Cemetery since 1833. The place is filled with old gravestones and gothic mausoleums(哥特式陵墓), the spirits of the dead hanging over the land like an early morning fog.

On this ady, she is bolding a bunch of pink rises because Goldie Belle always holds flowers. Someone makes sure of that. “And she has had fresh flowers in her hands for the last 150 years.” Karen Biery lives in Damascus, about five miles west of Hope Cemetery. At first, it was her father who brought the flowers and laid them in her hands. When he died in 1896,the flowers kept coming. Her flowers are different per season. Why do the flowers keep miraculously appearing? People have tried to find out by having camped by the statue, but not even the groundskeepers have been able to catch the criminal.

What Will Our Life Be in the Future?

With the rapid development of hi-tech, great changes will take place in every way in the future.

We completely live in the cyberspace where we don’t need to go out to buy things, to go to the library to read books, to see a doctor in the hospital, and so on. To our joy, it’s very easy for us to visit the moon and the Mars. And our world will be a tidy and green world because the energy we use is all from the sun. What’s more, any illness can be cured and many people can live a longer time with a healthy body.

All these can be true, I think, through our efforts.
